That is tragic but all too common nowadays. I guess if second hand bookshops don’t pay they don’t stay open. In England they have been driven out by charity shoops where people donate their old books and the shops sell them for charity for next to nothing. A worthwhile cause but it kills off second-hand bookshops. Buying on the Internet has also had an effect, of course.

I received this lovely card recently from a good (Internet) friend. I love anything that depicts people reading. I wish copyright didn’t stop me from posting lots and lots of the pictures that one can find on the web.
There are many, many pictures of women and girls reading books – from Victorian times to the modern day. But pictures of men reading are rare. This is one of my favourites.
Called ‘Bookworm’, it is by Carl Spitzweig and was painted in 1850.
